The magical atmosphere of the medina

The medina in Fez is so special because it’s the largest one in North Africa. As soon as you pass the city gates of Bab Boujloud and Bab Agnaou, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time. The car-free city centre has a medieval atmosphere and has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You’ll find herbs, leather wares, fresh produce, clothing and a whole lot more on sale at the many market stalls. The buildings are a treat for the eyes

Fez has many impressive buildings and one of these is Dar el Makhzen – the Royal Palace, where you can stroll around the lush palace gardens and marvel at the bronze doors and blue mosaics. It’s a magical sight! You should certainly also visit Medersa Bou Inania madrasa and admire the many colourful wood carvings and other decorations. In the north of the city, you will find the summer palace of Dar Batha, which dates back to the 19th century and houses a museum with an extensive collection of ceramics, wood carvings, textiles and traditional Moroccan art.

From Fez to Chefchaouen

If you’ve seen all of the attractions in Fez, jump into your rental car and head to Chefchaouen, also known as ‘the Blue Pearl’, which is only a 3-hour drive away. This is somewhere you absolutely cannot miss while you are in Morocco. Chefchaouen is located in the Rif mountains and it is the most photogenic city in the entire country. The medina is painted blue and has a labyrinth of narrow alleys with colourful decorations. This is somewhere you can easily spend a couple of days.
