The sights of Praia and Santiago

Start at the Plateau, the elevated historic centre of Praia with colonial buildings and a central square. Just 10 km from the city lies Cidade Velha, the former capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you'll discover the slave pillar Pelourinho, the cathedral ruins and the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe: a 16th-century fort with sweeping views over the bay. Those heading inland will find a bustling weekly market in Assomada and a genuine glimpse into everyday life on Santiago.

Nature and adventure on Santiago

Santiago is bigger and more varied than it first appears. Inland, you'll find Serra Malagueta, the national park with hiking trails across green mountain slopes and spectacular viewpoints over the coast. Along the coast and within walking distance of the city centre lies Quebra Canela Beach. In the northern part of the island you'll find the sheltered black sand beach of Tarrafal, which is surrounded by palm trees. Surfers and kitesurfers head to Ponta Preta, just outside the city, where the waves are at their best.

Music, food and the soul of Cape Verde

When darkness falls, Praia comes alive. Music drifts from open windows, and people eat outside at cosy bars and terraces. Cape Verde has a rich culture of its own, and you'll taste it on your plate too. Try cachupa, the national stew of maize and beans, or fresh fish straight from the island. At the market, pick up cuscuz with sugar and coconut in the morning. And be sure to try grogue, the strong sugarcane spirit that is inseparable from island life.
