The best sights in Faro

The capital of the Algarve, Faro is partly built on white rocks. The city has a rich history and is full of buildings and other remnants that date back to the Roman era. For example, the 2,000-year-old city walls in the old part Vula Adento. Also don't miss a visit to the cathedral Sé de Faro. This church was destroyed and later restored, featuring a mishmash of architectural styles. The charming restaurants serve up sardines from the grill, roasted chicken with piri piri and of course the Portuguese sweet pastry pastéis de nata. Go for a swim in the water of the Atlantic Ocean, for example at Praia de Faro beach. Planning a road trip through the Algarve? Then Faro is the perfect starting point.

Out and about in the sunny Algarve

To see everything in the Algarve, you will need some time. But with a rental car you can cover a lot of ground. Drive along fields where figs, almonds, olives, oranges and grapes glisten on the branches. Visit Ria Formosa Nature Park: a 60 kilometre long lagoon with sand banks, islets, white beaches and unique plants and animals, such as spoonbills and even dolphins. Take a wine tour and sample the local wines. Fan of hitting the green? The Algrave offers several magnificent golf courses with rolling hills, challenging holes and often a beautiful view. Prefer something more active? Go surfing and brave the waves. Odeceixe on the west coast or Zavial on the south coast are the places to go to.

"In the Algarve you can surf, golf, go on a road trip, eat authentic food and.... just relax on the beach."

How about stepping straight onto the beach out of your hotel? Then book a hotel in one of the many seaside resorts of the Algarve.
