Cultural treasures in Larnaca
The island of Cyprus is home to sacred sites for both Muslims and Christians. Larnaca is a charming seaside resort with a rich history. The city’s major attractions include the picturesque boulevard, the Byzantine Church of Saint Lazarus and the impressive salt lake. On the shore of the lake stands the famous Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. This unique building is an important pilgrimage site for Muslims. Another must-see attraction is the Agios Lazaros church, one of only three Byzantine churches that are still standing in Cyprus today.
Salt lake and flamingos
Some three kilometres from Larnaca, you’ll find the unique salt lake. Legend has it that, on this spot, St Lazarus (a person in the Bible) asked an old woman for a sip of water. When she refused, he took revenge by transforming her vineyard into a salt lake. From mid-November until early April, hundreds of pink flamingos can be found here. An amazing sight! In the summer, the water evaporates and only a layer of glistening white salt remains. There is a lovely footpath encircling the lake, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
“Cyprus is an island with a rich history. Combine that with the lovely beaches and Mediterranean climate and you have the perfect destination for a great beach holiday.”
Relaxing on the beach
Chances are that when you think of Cyprus, you immediately think of sun, sea and shore. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, this is the ideal destination for beach-lovers. Larnaca has two large beaches: Mackenzie Beach and Finikoudes Beach. If you’re travelling with the whole family, Mackenzie Beach is a good bet. The sand is level, the water is shallow and the beach is quiet enough for the kids to build sandcastles in peace. Finikoudes Beach is another great option. This beach is near the harbour and is the point of departure for a wide range of excursions.
