Discover the north and west of Crete

The north coast of Crete is dotted with bustling seaside resorts such as Malia Sissi, Rethymnon and Hersonissos. Luxurious hotels and long beaches make this a popular destination for a relaxing day. The largest city on the island is Heraklion. Here you will find an archaeological museum with unique finds and a Venetian harbour. It's a good starting point for exploring the rest of the island by rental car. For example, drive to Knossos and see the 4,000 year old palace and other impressive excavations. Or visit the city of Chania and wander through the narrow streets with charming terraces, old churches and squares. Make sure you see the Byzantine city wall. Nearby is picturesque Seitan Limania Bay where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. More to the west is Bálos beach: a beautiful lagoon with turquoise water and white sand. No wonder it's part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas in Europe.

A road trip through the south and east of Crete

On the south coast of Crete, you will find the former fishing village Plakias with fine restaurants and shops. Further on, you can relax on the quiet Preveli beach and explore a real fort. Ready to continue? Drive east towards Lassithi and visit picturesque villages. In Agios Nikolaos, plan a stop at Voulismeni: a beautiful inland lake surrounded by cliffs. Recharge your energy with a meal in one of the many charming local restaurants. The village of Kritsa is a perfect place to peruse local products and shop for souvenirs. Finish your day in a typical Greek taverna or visit the ruins of the ancient city of Lato. The region also boasts beaches such as Kato Zakros, Vai and Makrigialos: popular spots for sunbathing, restaurants and water activities.

A nature adventure

Crete has several mountain areas. In the west you have the Lefka Ori, also called White Mountains. Change your slippers for hiking boots and visit the Samaria Gorge national park. Walk between the steep rock walls and cross rivers on wooden bridges. Keep your eyes open to spot the famous Kri-Kri goat. You will recognise it by its light brown fur and dark band around its neck. In the more central Amári valley, you will find olive trees and vineyards. In the east lies the Lassithi plateau. This is the place for beautiful walks and enviable holiday photos.
