Kos is also the right place for cultural and historical highlights. The island has a rich past that can be seen all around you. From Greek and Roman buildings to Byzantine and Turkish remains: Kos is one big open-air museum. In the city of Kos, walk over the walls of the St. John's Castle and look at Hippocrates’ plane tree. It was this ancient tree that Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine, taught his students. Just north of Kos town is the Asklepieion. A popular health resort in ancient times, this is now the most important archaeological site on the whole island. Prefer to explore modern Greek culture? Then head to the mountain village of Zía. Here, you can enjoy delicious food and a beautiful view of the surroundings.
