Marrakech's sights

After a roughly 4-hour flight, you'll find yourself in a whole new world. Exploring the medina, Marrakech's old city centre, is an experience in and of itself. The Djeema El Fna square is at the bustling heart of the medina. From early in the morning till late in the evening you'll see market stalls, souvenir shops, and food tents here, while musicians, storytellers, and snake charmers provide a lively atmosphere. Many hotels that Transavia Holidays offers are in the middle of the medina, meaning you can easily get around on foot.

When wandering through the old city centre, you'll undoubtedly see the Koutoubia mosque stretching high above the rest of the buildings. This is the biggest mosque in Marrakech. Non muslims cannot enter unfortunately, but a walk around the surrounding park is definitely worth it. Want to learn more about the city's history? Check out Marrakech's various palaces. In the Bahia palace, you will feel like you are in a fairytale, while the remaining parts of the partly collapsed Badi palace will show you just how big the palace used to be.

Want to escape the city's busyness? Visit a real Moroccan garden. It will surprise you how many tranquil oases are hidden in the bustling centre. Admire the orange trees and colourful mosaics in the courtyard of the Dar El Bach city palace. Or, head on over to the Jardin Majorelle botanical garden, where you will discover unique plants.

“Marrakech is one surprise after the next: this city, with its many aromas and colours, is 1 big adventure.”

What else is there to do in Marrakech?

Your visit to Marrakech is not complete without a visit to the souks, the traditional Arabic markets. You'll find everything here, from olives to handmade jewellery and carpets. There is no shortage of things to explore here! A tip for your holiday in Marrakech: don't forget to haggle, because that is allowed here.

Seeking to reach new heights? Sail up on a hot air balloon. Enjoy the golden-red skies during sunrise and marvel at the palm trees, traditional Berber villages, and the Atlas Mountain peaks. This is the perfect way to experience the city in a completely different way.

Marrakech's culture

Those of us who love exploring new cultures will feel right at home in Marrakech. Many traditions have been preserved through the ages. For instance, the medina is even on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Everywhere you look, you will see artisans at work with traditional fabrics, street musicians and storytellers will give you a taster of the culture, and the prayers from the mosques will echo through the streets multiple times a day. Want to experience even more culture? Pick a traditional hotel to stay in in Marrakech. These houses and small palaces with courtyards have been refurbished into hotels and are known as riads. Transavia Holidays offers lots of lovely riads.

Food in Marrakech

The local food is a reason in and of itself to book a holiday to Marrakech. It is one of the best culinary cities in the world. And that is immediately evident, the Djemaa El Fna square truly comes to life in the evenings and is brimming with food stalls. Try maakoude (potato croquettes) and briouats (stuffed pastry bites), while listening to the street artists' music. Order a sugary mint tea or fresh juice. Still feeling peckish? Have some tajine (a stew with meat and/or vegetables) or enjoy the couscous at an atmospheric rooftop restaurant. Bon appetit, or as they say in Morocco: besaha!

Marrakech's weather

You will enjoy pleasant temperatures all year round in Marrakech. But what is the best time to travel to Marrakech? That would be the winter period, with temperatures usually being around 20°C. During the summer period, when temperatures often rise above 30°C, it is advisable to start the day off early. This way, you will enjoy the cool morning air. Look for a shadow in Marrakech's lovely gardens as soon as it gets hot and watch as the city comes to life.
