Discover the city of Gaudí

Few other cities can boast such famous architecture as Barcelona. The distinctive work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí is visible everywhere in this vibrant city near the Costa Brava. You can’t miss his Art Nouveau style in the Sagrada Família, the symbol of Barcelona. This impressive cathedral is Gaudí's lifework. Walk all the way around it to get a good view of the beautiful towers, organic shapes and numerous statues. Don't forget to look inside for the colourful stained-glass windows and the tomb of Gaudí himself. Fun fact: construction of the Sagrada Família started in 1882, but as the church can only be built with donations, it's still not completely finished. The Sagrada Família is supposed to be completed in 2026.

"When you think of world-famous architecture, you immediately think of Gaudí’s work in Barcelona. But the beaches, tapas and pure charm of all the neighbourhoods also mean that you can easily spend days enjoying this city."

Want to admire more Gaudí masterpieces? You can walk straight from Plaça de Catalunya, the central square, to Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Casa Vicens. These are unique, fairytale houses which Gaudí was commissioned to design for rich families. In the authentic neighbourhoods of this part of the city you will also find many fantastic hotels. If you go a little further north, you will find the famous Park Güell. Walk through this special city park and take in the vibrant colours and iconic shapes. There is a breathtaking view across the city. Need a break? Find a spot at Las Ramblas (officially La Rambla) and watch all the living statues, portrait artists and musicians around you. There is always something happening here! The best places for a snack and a drink are mainly on the side streets and the squares next to Las Ramblas.

Fancy a day at the beach or some culture?

In Barcelona, you’re never far from a day at the beach. Platja de Barceloneta is closest to the city centre, but Nova Icària, Bogatell and Mar Bella are also wonderful beaches for a relaxing day. Rested and tanned after a few hours on the warm sand? Visit the green city hill of Montjuïc and its castle. If you like football, go to the Camp Nou stadium or take in more culture at one of the city's numerous museums. You can find spectacular nature 50 kilometres from Barcelona in the beautiful Montserrat Mountains. Hire a car and go for a leisurely hike along the rock formations in the Catalan countryside. When your return, you can dive straight back into city life!
