Culture and ancient buildings

If you go to Athens for your last minute trip, city break or sun holiday, don't miss a visit to the old city. Step out of your hotel and soak up the history. Travel back to Ancient Greece as you admire the temples, ruins, cathedrals and theatres. Towering high above the city, the Acropolis is the symbol of Greece. On this plain, you will find the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, among other things. This last place is an open air theatre where you can still see performances. Venture further out and explore Panathinaiko Stadium, beautiful Agora park and the impressive cathedral. From the top of Areopagus and Lykavittos hills you have a breathtaking view over the city and the Acropolis.

The districts of Athens

Sightseeing is a great way to work up an appetite. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to taste authentic Greek cuisine. Right next to Plaka is the Anafiotika district, with its white houses and coloured doors. Visit the Varvakios Agora central market, where you can buy authentic local products such as fish, vegetables and of course olives. The trendier Psyri district features bars, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The vibrant Monastiraki district is great for shopping.
