“A bustling harbour, a lovely historic city centre and breathtaking beaches… That’s Rijeka in a nutshell.”

Soak up culture

From the city centre of Rijeka, there’s a path that takes you to the castle known as Trsat. This castle dates from the 13th century, making it the oldest building in the city. It stands atop a mountain and can only be reached by climbing 538 steps. But it’s well worth the effort, because once you reach the summit you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Rijeka and the rest of the Kvarner Bay. Next to the castle, you’ll find the Franciscan cloister and Our Lady’s Church. This makes this unique place one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Croatia. Interested in learning about the history of this Croatian harbour town? In the Rijeka City Museum, you can learn more about the harbour. Here you can also admire model ships, maps, antique weapons and archaeological finds.

Relax by the water

Rijeka is home to three well-known beaches. To the east lies Sablićevo beach, where young and old alike can enjoy a pleasant day at the shore. On the western side of the city, you’ll find Ploče beach. This beach is ideal for families because the wide pebble beach slopes very gradually into deeper water, making it a great place to play in the surf. Another must-see is Igralište beach. This beach boasts a volleyball court, showers and a restaurant where you can enjoy a refreshing drink, even after the sun goes down. Put on your sunglasses and settle in for some rest and relaxation.
